As vehicle sensing, computational, and assistance systems advance, supporting driver attention in real-time across a range of operating contexts is crucial. Traditional distraction mitigation approaches and design guidelines have not evolved with vehicle technology and the growing research on driver attention management. The AHEAD consortium, an academic-industry partnership led by MIT, is pioneering the development of a scalable framework for assessing and enhancing driver attention. This framework leverages existing vehicle sensors and a growing range of driver sensing systems to inform adaptive systems and countermeasures. This presentation will introduce AHEAD’s motivation, approach, and operational considerations that are being leveraged by industrial partners.
In this session, you will learn more about:
Dr. Reimer is the founder and co-director of the MIT AgeLab’s Advanced Vehicle Technology (AVT) consortium and Advanced Human Factors Evaluator for Attentional Demand (AHEAD) consortium. He is a research advisory board member for Autoliv, an advisor to AI Sweden, former advisor to Affectiva, and a member of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Transforming Transportation Advisory Committee. He collaborates with industries, governments, and non-government organizations worldwide on the topics of driver safety, vehicle automation and other technological concerns related to human factors and Artificial Intelligence.
A seasoned conference and event presenter, Reimer has provided keynote addresses on the topics of driver attention and vehicle automation. In his 2018 TEDx talk, “There’s more to the safety of driverless cars than AI”, he discusses the undertreated health crisis on our roads and the limits of focusing on automation alone as a solution. He suggests that the modernization and automation of our mobility ecosystem will require increased transparency and collaboration between the public and private sectors to enhance consumer trust and make vehicle automation the most critical life-saving technology of the century. He is an author on over 250 technical contributions informing technology development, business strategy, and public policy.
